Stokes Hill Wharf: Where Darwin's Sunset Cruises Board

Where each Darwin sunset cruise boards on Stokes Hill Wharf, Dock 1 or Dock 3, the walk from the city, parking rules and the free shuttle, the bus, and why not Cullen Bay.

Updated October 2026

Every sunset cruise in Darwin boards at Stokes Hill Wharf, 45 Stokes Hill Road, at the far end of the Darwin Waterfront. Sail Darwin’s catamaran leaves from Dock 1, the first jetty on the right as you come onto the wharf. Cape Adieu and the Charles Darwin leave from Dock 3, at the very end of the wharf behind Crustaceans restaurant, where Darwin Harbour Cruises’ crew meet guests under the large blue umbrellas. From the city it is about a five-minute walk to the Waterfront over a sky bridge with a glass lift, then a few more minutes along the wharf.

Walking from the city

The Darwin Waterfront is an easy five-minute walk from the city centre. From the city, the walkway crosses to the Waterfront on a sky bridge under raintrees, with signs on Darwin’s history along the way, and a glass-walled lift and ramps take you down to the Waterfront’s level, so the route works with a pram or a wheelchair. From the Convention Centre it is about 400 m along the wharf to Dock 3. Allow 15 minutes from Smith Street Mall to the end of the wharf, and wear flat shoes.

Parking

  • On the wharf: start a session in the PayStay app; the first three hours are free, then AUD 10 an hour. Three hours covers a two-hour cruise on the Charles Darwin if you arrive at 5:30, but not a three-hour sail plus boarding, and fines are issued once the three hours run out: for an evening cruise, park off the wharf.
  • Around the Waterfront: the outdoor car parks about 500 m from the wharf cost AUD 2 an hour or AUD 6 a day from 8 am to 4 pm and are free from 4 pm, which suits every evening cruise.
  • Under the Convention Centre: the basement car park is open 24 hours at a flat AUD 5 a day.
  • Free shuttle: a free shuttle runs around the Waterfront from 4 pm to 9 pm every day, and at lunchtime from 11:30 am to 2 pm.

Rates from the Darwin Waterfront Corporation, checked October 2026.

By bus or taxi

Route 14 of Darwin’s public bus network serves the Waterfront, with a stop at the Convention Centre, and also runs via Cullen Bay. The city’s bus interchange on Harry Chan Avenue is a few minutes’ walk from the lift. After a cruise, at 8 pm, a taxi or rideshare from the Waterfront is the easy way back to a hotel outside the centre.

Why not Cullen Bay

Cullen Bay Marina, on the other side of the peninsula, is a small, sheltered marina close to the centre, entered by boats through a lock; the ferry to Mandorah, across the harbour, leaves from there. None of the sunset cruises on this site boards there. Some older pages still give Sail Darwin’s former office address at Cullen Bay; the boat boards at Dock 1 on Stokes Hill Wharf. If you are staying at Cullen Bay, route 14 links it with the Waterfront.

Before or after the cruise

The wharf has restaurants and a food court, and the Waterfront around it has a wave pool and a lagoon, so arriving early is easy. Mindil Beach and its sunset market are on the other side of the peninsula, about 3.5 km away; the Mindil Beach guide covers it, and the harbour cruise guide sets out every cruise that leaves from the wharf.
