Mindil Beach Sunset Market or a Sunset Cruise?
Mindil Beach Sunset Market: Thursday and Sunday evenings from late April to late October, getting there, parking and buses, and when a Darwin sunset cruise is the better evening.
Mindil Beach Sunset Market runs on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 4 to 9 pm, from the last Thursday in April to the last Thursday in October, on Mindil Beach, less than 3 km from the city centre. The market is the sunset from the sand with food stalls behind you; a cruise is the sunset from the water with dinner served, on most evenings of the dry season.
Thursday is the main market, with every stall trading; Sunday is smaller, often called the locals’ night. The 2026 season opened on Thursday 30 April and, by the market’s rule, its last night was Thursday 29 October. By the same rule the 2027 season opens on Thursday 29 April, the year Mindil turns 40; the market had not printed its 2027 dates when we checked in October 2026.

Getting there
- On foot: the market is an easy walk from the city via Smith Street or McMinn Street.
- By bus: routes 4 and 6 run every day of the week; on Thursday market nights extra buses run from the Darwin interchange (route 15) and from Casuarina (route 19).
- By car: parking is free, through Gilruth Avenue. Sunset is between about 6:30 and 7 pm in the market season, so arrive early for a space.
Dogs are not allowed in the market, except service dogs. It goes ahead in rain unless the site is judged unsafe.
When a cruise is the better evening
The market is the right answer if you want the street food, the crafts and the crowd on the beach, and do not want to spend on anything else. A cruise is the better evening if you want the sunset itself without the crowd, a seat, and dinner brought to you, or if your nights in Darwin are not a Thursday or a Sunday. The lowest-priced cruise is Gaze and Graze on the Charles Darwin: two hours from 6 pm with a grazing platter, mango ice cream and a seat on the open sundeck, from US$91 (checked October 2026), with free cancellation up to 3 days before on GetYourGuide.
Doing both
The simplest plan is the market on one night and a cruise on another; with cruises on most dry-season evenings, that is easy to arrange.

A sunset on the sand: the camel ride
Darwin Camel Rides walks a small group of up to 8 along Mindil Beach as the sun goes down: 45 minutes with a guide, helmets provided, for riders from age 4. Weights are checked on arrival, and riders over 130 kg cannot ride. It meets at the northern entrance of Mindil Beach on Maria Liveris Drive, from US$109 (checked October 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours before: see the sunset camel ride. Its calendar showed the first dates of 2027 in April when we checked in October 2026.
The sunset, and the season
Sunset in the market season falls between 6:28 pm in early June and 6:46 pm on its last night in late October, by the U.S. Naval Observatory’s figures. The sunset times guide has every month, and the dry season or wet season guide shows which cruises sail when the market is closed.

The Same Sunset, from the Sundeck
Gaze and Graze on the Charles Darwin: two hours on the harbour from 6 pm with a grazing platter and mango ice cream, the lowest-priced sunset cruise from Stokes Hill Wharf.
