Darwin Harbour Cruise: Which One to Take

Every Darwin Harbour cruise side by side: the sunset sail, the dinner and platter cruises on the Charles Darwin, Cape Adieu's four courses and the lunch cruise, with times and prices.

Updated October 2026

A Darwin Harbour cruise is an evening thing. The cruises that sail the harbour as scheduled public trips, rather than private charters, are sunset cruises from Stokes Hill Wharf: Sail Darwin’s catamaran, Cape Adieu’s dinner cruise and two cruises on the Charles Darwin, a three-level catamaran. The one daytime option is the Charles Darwin’s 90-minute lunch cruise, which sails on selected days in the dry season. All of them stay inside the harbour, on calm water, with the city on one side and low mangrove shores on the other.

If you want one cruise and do not mind which, the Charles Darwin’s buffet dinner cruise is the easiest to book: two hours from 6 pm, with a seafood buffet and two air-conditioned decks, and free cancellation up to 3 days before on its GetYourGuide listing (checked October 2026).

The boats

The Charles Darwin is Darwin Harbour Cruises’ 25-metre catamaran, built in Adelaide in 1990, with three levels: two air-conditioned indoor decks and an open sundeck on top. Its buffet cruise and its Gaze and Graze cruise both sail it from 6 to 8 pm; the difference is the food, and on Gaze and Graze your seat is on the sundeck. The bar takes cards only.

Sundancer NT is Sail Darwin’s 15-metre (50-foot) sailing catamaran, built in 2005. It is the one harbour cruise under sail, and the smallest group: the sail needs at least 10 guests to go out.

Cape Adieu is a 70-foot former working boat built in 1978, with three open deck areas, surveyed for 60 guests. Its galley cooks a set four-course menu on board, and it sails only in the dry season.

What you see from the water

The cruises leave Stokes Hill Wharf and follow the city’s shoreline: the Waterfront, the Esplanade, Larrakeyah, Cullen Bay and on toward Fannie Bay. The sun goes down over the harbour and the low far shore around Mandorah, between 6:28 and 6:43 pm in the dry season, by the U.S. Naval Observatory’s figures. The sunset times guide shows where it sets in each month.

Day or evening

The lunch cruise is the only scheduled cruise in daylight. It sails at 12:30 pm from Dock 3 with commentary on board, takes 90 minutes, and Darwin Harbour Cruises runs it from May to September; the GetYourGuide calendar opens again in June 2027 (checked October 2026). In the middle of the day the harbour is hot and bright, and the air-conditioned deck is welcome.

The evening cruises are the reason most people go. In the dry season the air cools a little after 5 pm, the light goes gold, and the sunset lands in the middle of every cruise on this page. Out of season, from December to March, check the calendars first: on many nights none sails. The dry season or wet season guide has the months.

Booking: which listing

The Charles Darwin’s three cruises are on GetYourGuide with free cancellation up to 3 days before; their Viator listings, and Sail Darwin’s, were final sales with no refund when we checked in October 2026. Cape Adieu’s Viator listing allows a full refund up to 24 hours before. Children 3 and under travel free on the Charles Darwin, and its buffet cruise has a youth price for ages 4 to 17.

Getting to the wharf

Stokes Hill Wharf is at the far end of the Darwin Waterfront, reached from the city over a sky bridge and a glass lift. Parking on the wharf is free for three hours with a PayStay session and AUD 10 an hour after that, which is tight for a three-hour cruise. The Waterfront’s other car parks, about 500 m from the wharf, are free from 4 pm, and the Convention Centre’s basement charges AUD 5 a day (checked October 2026). The Stokes Hill Wharf guide has the map.
