Dry Season or Wet Season: When to Take a Darwin Sunset Cruise
Darwin's dry season, build-up and wet season for a sunset cruise: rain by month, which cruises sail in each month, sunset times, cyclone season and Mindil Beach market.
Go between May and September if you can. That is Darwin’s dry season: on average less than 21 mm of rain a month and fewer than two rainy days, by the Bureau of Meteorology’s records for Darwin Airport, and every sunset cruise sails most evenings. October and November, the build-up, are hot and humid, and some cruises still sail. From December to March the monsoon brings Darwin’s heaviest rain, between 255 and 432 mm a month on average, and on the cruise calendars read on 31 October 2026 most evenings in those months had no departure at all.

Rain: mean monthly rainfall and mean days with 1 mm or more at Darwin Airport, Bureau of Meteorology, records from 1941 (read October 2026). Sunset at Stokes Hill Wharf from the U.S. Naval Observatory. Cruises: the dates loaded on the Viator calendars of Sail Darwin’s sunset sail, the Charles Darwin’s buffet and Gaze and Graze cruises and Cape Adieu’s dinner cruise, read 31 October 2026 for November 2026 to October 2027. Cape Adieu’s own site gives its season as April to October.

The dry season, May to September
This is the season the cruises are built for. The Bureau of Meteorology puts Darwin’s dry season between May and September; June, July and August average less than 5 mm of rain a month. Days reach about 31 degrees and nights fall to 19 or 20, the lowest of the year, and the skies are clear on most days. Sunset falls between 6:28 and 6:43 pm, so the sun goes down in the middle of every cruise. Cape Adieu sails every evening, Sail Darwin and the Charles Darwin most evenings, and Mindil Beach Sunset Market runs on Thursdays and Sundays. Book ahead: this is when Darwin is busiest.
The build-up, October to December
The Bureau calls the first months of the wet season, October to December, the build-up: temperature and humidity rise, and the rain comes in isolated storms. Days average 33 degrees and nights stay at about 25. For a sunset cruise it can be the most dramatic time of year: storm clouds build over the water in the afternoon and often stay out there, lit up at sunset. It is also when the cruises start to stop. On the Viator calendars read on 31 October 2026, Sail Darwin had dates on most nights of November and up to 6 December, and the Charles Darwin on selected nights in November; Cape Adieu had no dates before May 2027.

The wet season, December to March
From December the monsoon arrives, and January is the wettest month, with 432 mm of rain on 19 days on average. The official tropical cyclone season for the Australian region runs from 1 November to 30 April. On the calendars read on 31 October 2026 there was no sunset cruise loaded for January or February, the Charles Darwin’s buffet cruise came back on 9 March 2027, and Sail Darwin from 1 May 2027. The Charles Darwin has sailed on selected nights in late summer before: Darwin Harbour Cruises offered dates in late February and March 2026. If your trip falls in the wet, check the calendar for your nights before you plan around a cruise.
April and October, the edges
April is the change of season: rain drops to about 100 mm and the Charles Darwin’s two cruises are back on most evenings. Cape Adieu’s own site gives its season as April to October, but on its Viator calendar the first dates were from 15 May 2027. Mindil Beach Sunset Market opens on the last Thursday in April and closes on the last Thursday in October. October is the start of the build-up, hotter and more humid, with a few storms; Sail Darwin and the Charles Darwin still sail most evenings.
Clocks and sunset
The Northern Territory keeps one clock all year, 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC, with no daylight saving, so the cruises keep the same times in every month. Sunset moves only between 6:28 pm in late May and early June and 7:20 pm in late January. What changes more is where the sun goes down: well to the right of due west in the dry season, over the far shore past Mandorah, and to the left in the wet.

The sunset times guide has every month and where the sun sets over the harbour.

Still Sailing in the Build-Up
Darwin Harbour Cruises' buffet dinner cruise on the Charles Darwin has dates into late November and again from March, with two air-conditioned decks for a humid evening.
