How the Sunset Cruise Works
Board at Dock 1 on Stokes Hill Wharf, sail out across the harbour, watch the sun go down and come back after dark.
Board at Dock 1
Sail Darwin's catamaran leaves from Dock 1, the first jetty on the right as you come onto Stokes Hill Wharf. Be there by 4:45 pm: the boat leaves at 5:00 pm sharp and cannot wait.
Out across the Harbour
The catamaran sails out into Darwin Harbour with the sparkling wine already poured. Beer and other wine are bring-your-own, and there are iced eskies on board for them.
The Sun Goes Down
Sunset in Darwin falls between 6:28 pm in early June and 7:20 pm in late January, so it always lands in the middle of the sail, with the tapas coming round course by course.
Back at 8 pm
The boat returns to Stokes Hill Wharf at 8 pm, a short walk from the Waterfront's restaurants and the lift up to the city.

The Guide
A Darwin Sunset Cruise, Boat by Boat
Which cruise does what, what the food and drinks cover, the months they sail, and where you board.
Darwin sits on a low peninsula with its harbour to the west and south, so from the water the sun goes down over the harbour and the low far shore around Mandorah. A sunset cruise is the way to see it from the water: two or three hours on a sailing catamaran, a three-deck harbour catamaran or a 70-foot former working boat, with dinner or a platter served while the sky changes colour. All of them board at Stokes Hill Wharf on the Darwin Waterfront, a short walk from the city. Sunset in Darwin falls between 6:28 pm in early June and 7:20 pm in late January, by the U.S. Naval Observatory’s figures, and the cruises leave at 5 or 6 pm and come back at 8, so the sun goes down while you are out.
The short answer
For one evening, take Sail Darwin’s sunset cruise: three hours on a 50-foot sailing catamaran, with sparkling wine, soft drinks and water poured all evening and a tapas dinner served course by course. It costs from US$135 an adult on Viator, rated 4.8 from 1,063 reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor (checked October 2026). Sail Darwin’s own price is AUD 189 for adults and AUD 99 for children (checked October 2026). Beer and other wine are bring-your-own, and there are iced eskies on board for them. Board at Dock 1 on Stokes Hill Wharf by 4:45 pm: the boat leaves at 5:00 pm sharp and is back at 8:00.
Check dates for the sunset sail
Two things to know before you book: the sail needs at least 10 guests to go out, and a booking on its Viator listing is final, with no refund if you cancel (checked October 2026). If you would rather sit down to a full dinner, or want a cheaper evening, one of the cards below suits you better.

When the cruises run
Darwin has two seasons that matter here. The dry season, May to September, is when the sunset cruises sail most evenings: almost no rain, clear skies, and a sunset between 6:28 and 6:43 pm. The wet season brings the monsoon rains from December to March, and fewer cruises: Cape Adieu sails only from April to October, and on the Viator calendars read on 31 October 2026, Sail Darwin had dates loaded to 6 December 2026 and again from May 2027, and Darwin Harbour Cruises’ Charles Darwin selected dates in November 2026 and again from March 2027. The build-up, October to December, is hot and humid, with storms that often stay out over the water and colour the sunset. The dry season or wet season guide has every month.
Where the boats leave from

All three operators board at Stokes Hill Wharf, at the end of the Darwin Waterfront:
| Cruise | Board at | Be there |
|---|---|---|
| Sail Darwin's sunset sail | Dock 1, the first jetty on the right as you come onto the wharf | 4:45 pm, for 5:00 |
| Cape Adieu's dinner cruise | Dock 3, at the far end of the wharf, behind Crustaceans | 5:00 pm, lines off 5:15 |
| Charles Darwin buffet cruise | Dock 3, under the blue umbrellas | 5:30 to 5:45 pm, sails at 6:00 |
| Gaze and Graze platter cruise | Dock 3, under the blue umbrellas | 5:30 to 5:45 pm, sails at 6:00 |
None of them leaves from Cullen Bay. The Stokes Hill Wharf guide has the walk from the city, the parking rules on the wharf and a close-up map.
What is included
The food is part of every sunset cruise here; the drinks are where they differ. Sail Darwin pours sparkling wine and soft drinks all evening and lets you bring your own beer or wine. Cape Adieu and the Charles Darwin have licensed bars, you pay for drinks on board, and no BYO alcohol is allowed; the Charles Darwin takes cards only. For food it is tapas on Sail Darwin, a four-course plated dinner on Cape Adieu, a seafood buffet or a grazing platter on the Charles Darwin. The sunset dinner cruises guide sets them side by side, with what each costs in Australian dollars at the operator.
Who should pick something else
- Only want to see the sunset: on Thursday and Sunday evenings in the dry season, Mindil Beach Sunset Market fills the beach for the sunset, with food stalls from 4 pm. The Mindil Beach guide compares it with a cruise.
- A sunset on land, with an animal: Darwin Camel Rides walks a small group along Mindil Beach as the sun goes down, from US$109 (checked October 2026): the sunset camel ride.
- A daytime cruise: the Charles Darwin’s 90-minute lunch cruise sails at 12:30 pm on selected days in the dry season, with a platter of Top End produce. The Darwin harbour cruise guide covers the day and evening cruises.
- Visiting from December to March: check the calendars before you plan around a cruise; on many nights none sails. The sunset times guide has the hour in every month.

Darwin Sunset Cruise: Questions
Price, the season, where to board, drinks and how to book.
From about US$91 to US$135 an adult on GetYourGuide and Viator (checked October 2026). In Australian dollars, on the operators' own sites in October 2026: Darwin Harbour Cruises' Gaze and Graze platter cruise AUD 129, its buffet dinner cruise AUD 149 to 164, Sail Darwin's three-hour sunset sail AUD 189 (children AUD 99) and Cape Adieu's four-course dinner cruise from AUD 189. Drinks are extra on every boat except Sail Darwin, which pours sparkling wine and soft drinks. The dinner cruises compared guide lines them up.
Fewer of them, on fewer nights. Cape Adieu sails its dinner cruises in the dry season only, April to October. The Viator calendars read on 31 October 2026 held Sail Darwin's sunset sail on most nights to 6 December 2026 and again from May 2027, and Darwin Harbour Cruises' Charles Darwin on selected nights in November 2026 and again from March 2027. Between December and March the monsoon brings Darwin's heaviest rain. The dry season or wet season guide has the months side by side.
Stokes Hill Wharf, at the Darwin Waterfront. Sail Darwin boards at Dock 1, the first jetty on the right as you come onto the wharf; Cape Adieu and Darwin Harbour Cruises board at Dock 3 at the far end. None of the three leaves from Cullen Bay. The wharf is about a five-minute walk from the city over the Waterfront's sky bridge and lift, then along the wharf. The Stokes Hill Wharf guide has a map and the parking.
Between 6:28 pm and 7:20 pm all year. The earliest sunsets are in late May and early June, the latest in late January, by the U.S. Naval Observatory's figures. The Northern Territory keeps the same clock all year, UTC+9:30, with no daylight saving, so the cruises keep the same times: out at 5 or 6 pm and back at 8, with the sunset in between. The sunset times guide has every month.
Only on Sail Darwin. Sail Darwin includes sparkling wine, soft drinks and water, and lets you bring your own beer or wine, with iced eskies on board. Cape Adieu and Darwin Harbour Cruises have licensed bars and allow no BYO alcohol; Darwin Harbour Cruises takes cards only, no cash.
Yes, on all three operators' sunset cruises. Sail Darwin has a child price for under-18s, who must come with an adult. Darwin Harbour Cruises charges a youth price for ages 4 to 17 on its buffet cruise and lets children 3 and under travel free. Cape Adieu welcomes families on its dinner cruise. Alcohol is served from 18.
They are different evenings, and the market only runs in the dry season. Mindil Beach Sunset Market opens on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 4 to 9 pm, from the last Thursday in April to the last Thursday in October: food stalls, crafts and a crowd on the beach for the sunset. A cruise puts you on the water with dinner served. The Mindil Beach guide compares them and has the dates.
A hat, sunscreen and flat shoes. Darwin is warm all year, between about 31 and 33 degrees by day on the Bureau of Meteorology's averages, so most people wear light clothes, and Cape Adieu asks for smart casual and recommends flat shoes over heels on deck. Bring your booking confirmation, and on Sail Darwin your own beer or wine if you want them.
